Col d'Orcia Brunello di Montalcino from Tuscany is a certified-organic, single-variety Sangiovese of real depth and elegance, aged for three years in large oak casks and then rested in the cellar for at least a year before release, giving it a classical structure that is built to last. Garnet with an evolving rim, it opens with layers of dried cherry, sun-warmed plum and violet, shifting into notes of iron-tinged earth, dried sage and a subtle hint of baking spice on the finish. It is dry and full-bodied with firm, grippy tannins that demand patience, best served at room temperature, and confidently rewards cellaring well into 2040. Current winemaker Santiago Navarro guides this wine from one of Montalcino's most respected estates, a property with a history stretching back to the 1890s that has long championed organic viticulture long before it became fashionable in the region. Col d'Orcia has earned recognition as one of the most reliably excellent and underappreciated estates in all of Brunello, offering a level of quality that rivals producers charging considerably more. Serve it with a slow-braised pork shoulder with fennel and white beans, where the wine's earthy complexity and bright acidity will lift every bite, or pour it alongside venison stew with roasted root vegetables, letting its firm tannins and dark fruit stand up magnificently to the richness of the game.
