Château le Grand Retour Côtes du Rhône from the Plan de Dieu plateau is a rich, round, elegantly structured red from old vines that delivers a level of complexity and character that makes it one of the most impressive value propositions in the entire Rhône Valley. Deep ruby in the glass, it opens with an enticing nose of dried mission fig, smoked meat and a suggestion of crushed stone, flowing into flavours of roasted plum, cardamom and a thread of bitter dark chocolate on the palate, all supported by fine, polished tannins and a bright, focused acidity that keeps the finish clean and lingering. It is bone dry and full-bodied, best served just below room temperature, and will continue to drink beautifully through 2028. The Plan de Dieu, whose name translates poetically as the Plain of God, is a distinctive sub-zone of the Côtes du Rhône appellation sitting on an elevated plateau of clay and limestone soils that lend wines grown here a particular richness and mineral definition that sets them apart from the broader appellation. Serve it with a thick, juicy gourmet burger loaded with aged cheddar and caramelized onions, where the wine's dark fruit and structured tannins will stand up magnificently to every bold, indulgent bite, or pair it with grilled pork chops finished with a mustard and herb crust, letting its cardamom spice and polished structure complement the savory richness of the dish beautifully.

Food pairings: gourmet hamburgers, grilled pork chops, barbecued steak.
