Château La Garricq from Moulis-en-Médoc is a Cru Bourgeois Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot that shows the quiet, understated elegance this often overlooked appellation does so well. Brick-tinged garnet in the glass, it opens with a compelling nose of orange zest, dried apricot and smoked meat, shifting into flavours of star anise, wet slate and toasted hazelnut on the palate, with a long, composed finish that carries a pleasing suggestion of Earl Grey tea. It is bone dry and full-bodied with fine, silky tannins that have knitted together beautifully with age, best served at room temperature, and will continue to drink well through 2030. Moulis-en-Médoc is one of the six communal appellations of the Médoc and one of its best kept secrets, producing wines of genuine Bordeaux pedigree at a fraction of the price of its more famous neighbours Margaux and Saint-Julien, and Château La Garricq stands as one of its most reliable ambassadors. Serve it with a pork tenderloin glazed with whole grain mustard and roasted garlic, where the wine's savoury complexity and composed structure will complement the dish's subtle richness beautifully, or enjoy it alongside a board of aged hard cheeses with sliced pear and toasted walnuts, letting its nutty, mineral undertones echo the nutty depth of a well-aged Comté or Gruyère.

Food pairings: filet mignon, pork tenderloin, hard cheese.
