Natalie's Score: 90/100

Château Devise d'Ardilley Haut-Médoc from Bordeaux is a refined, medium to full-bodied red offering aromas of ripe blackcurrant, cedar, and hints of sweet spice. It's dry with firm tannins and a balanced structure. Serve it slightly below room temperature with grilled ribeye steak as the wine's robust framework and dark fruit concentration will enhance the charred meat's savory richness beautifully, or pair it with aged Comté cheese where the wine's structured tannins and elegant finish will complement the cheese's nutty complexity perfectly. Jacques Philippe, a former engineer who purchased the estate in 2000 with his wife Madeleine (a Bordeaux native), fulfilled their dream of becoming winemakers and achieved Cru Bourgeois status by 2003—the same classification that was renewed in 2025. Founded in 1991 near Saint-Laurent-Médoc and just inland from the prestigious Pauillac vineyards, this 10-hectare certified organic estate employs eco-grazing and won the prestigious Coupe des Crus Bourgeois with their remarkable 2008 vintage. Enjoy now or cellar for 6-10 years.

Food pairings: grilled ribeye steak, aged Comté cheese, braised lamb shanks.

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
