Château des Capitans Juliénas A.O.C. is a 100% Gamay from the heart of one of Beaujolais's ten Cru appellations, and it drinks like a Gamay that has something to prove. On the nose it's all crushed raspberry, dried violet, and a whisper of warm clove. The palate is bright and medium-bodied, with sour cherry, a thread of black pepper, and silky tannins that build quietly toward a clean, bone-dry finish with real energy behind it. Les Vins Georges Duboeuf co-purchased Château des Capitans in 2004, with the estate's 50-year-old vines growing in a single southeast-facing block around the château at 320 metres elevation. The hamlet of Les Capitans takes its name from its history as a Roman military headquarters, and the appellation of Juliénas itself honours Julius Caesar. Serve it slightly chilled and drink it now through 2030. Pour it alongside roast chicken with herbes de Provence, where the wine's bright red fruit cuts through the pan juices beautifully, or try it with a pepper steak for a mid-week dinner that tastes far more indulgent than the effort required.

Food pairings: roast chicken, grilled veggie burgers, pepper steak.
