Beronia Vareia 2020 Wine Review

Beronia was founded in 1973 by a group of food-loving Basque friends with their own gastronomic society, and the Vareia draws on a lone parcel of bush-trained Tempranillo, planted in 1950 on the clay and limestone soils of Ollauri. A dark cassis quality and a faint cola-like spice greet the nose first, with a smoky cumin note settling in behind, while the palate stays taut and focused, dark fig fruit framed by polished tannins that never tip into heaviness. It's a single-vineyard wine that wears its provenance proudly, finishing long without ever feeling overdone. Drink it now through 2030 with roasted meats or a sharp aged cheese.
