Reviews and Ratings

Gorgeous Niagara Pinot Noir grown in the Lowery Vineyard. Aromas of cherry, fresh earth and violets. This wine was deftly aged in oak barrels. Pair with duck. MINE: From St. David's Bench in the Niagara Peninsula, Bachelder Lowrey Vineyard Old Vines (XXXX) is a rich Pinot Noir with grapes grown in the Lowery Vineyard. On the nose, the wine is floral with ripe cherry and raspberry with more on the palate. This wine is elegant, balanced with great acidity -- a perfect pairing to an herbed rack of lamb. OTHER: Greg Hughes rated this wine as 94/100 with the following review: This is definitely a wine to hold back in the cellar a bit. Yes, it is really tasty now, but it has the stuff to be much better even in two years. This wine captured the sunny personality of Niagara, but 2014 afforded a lot more cool-climate variation (some nice spice and structured tannin). Aromas of chicory coffee, cherry, beet sauce, raspberry, violet, and rosehip. The flavours are silky, but structured. Gently extracted flavours of red and black cherry, tobacco, coffee, raspberry, blackberry, and plum. Lowrey is one of the few places in Niagara that produces mostly for commercial wineries to buy. Their land is extremely small and limited. The fruit they produce is some of the most highly regarded and sought after in Niagara. The family that runs the property makes a tiny amount of wine under the name 5-Rows. Like Bachelder's Lowrey, it is hard to find but always well worth the search. Reviewer's choice. OTHER: Andrea Shapiro, Sommelier rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review: Pale ruby colour with a garnet hue. On the nose - Strawberry, raspberry, licorice, anise, baking spices with a hint of earth and wet leaves. Also some iron and gamey blood notes. Flavours reveal dashes of underripe strawberry, licorice, dark chocolate, raspberries and chewy earth. Much reflected from the aromas straight into the palate. Well balanced, medium minus body, tannins and finish with A higher, medium acidity. This is a pleasure to drink on its own or to try pairing with some smoked oysters and gouda cheese. Delectable. 92 points. OTHER: Rachelle O'Connor rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review: The Lowery Vineyard has a rich terroir of clay and limestone soils - this Pinot Noir has lovely aromas of with cherry, baking spice, earth and smoke. The palate has lots of tart cherry, a hint of vanilla, violet and smoky undertones. It is beautifully crafted and well balanced. OTHER: Weather in Ontario's 2015 vintage was a bit chaotic, particularly early in the growing season, but old vines - such as the Pinot Noir vines used to make this wine, which were planted in the 1980s in dolomitic limestone interspersed with clay - are so deeply rooted as to not even notice such trifles. Expect rich, brambly berry fruit, earth, mineral and wisps of oak, and pair the wine with beef bourguignon or seared duck breast with braised mushrooms. Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a fiesty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
