The paddle on the label of this Ottawa Valley whisky nods to Whitewater Distilling's roots in river culture. It's broken on purpose, a symbol of Canadian ingenuity for finding a way forward when something snaps. Corn, rye and single malt whiskies from Canada are married together in barrels that once held bourbon. Roasted almond and ripe pear come first, then honey and vanilla bean, with a warm hum of rye at the end. Whitewater is a 1% for the Planet member, so 1% of its sales go to environmental groups. Set it out with sharp cheddar and apple slices before Thanksgiving dinner, or save a dram for the pumpkin pie.

Whisky food pairings: sharp cheddar and apple board, maple-glazed ham, pumpkin pie, butter tarts.

Natalie MacLean reviewed this Broken Paddle Artisanal Whisky for the Vintages release of September 26, 2026.

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
