Kopke LBV Port 2018, Douro D.O.P., Portugal: In 1634, Nicolau Kopkë settled in Portugal as Consul General of the Hanseatic League and in 1638, the first bottles of wine were shipped to Northern Europe. In 1781, Kopkë transitioned from a wine-buying company to a producer of wines and then gradually focused on making Port wines from the Upper Douro. They acquired São Luiz in 1922 and this is the place where Kopke’s DOC Douro wines have since been produced. Main grapes grown here are Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Cão with small plots of Tinta Barroca and Souzão. Kopkë 2018 LBV Port is a deep inky purple in the glass with rich aromas of wild dark berry, liquid raspberry, violets, cracked pepper, minty flavours vibrant and long on the palate, and framed by rich, structured tannins. Lovely finesse and mousse with green apple vibrancy. The grapes were hand-picked in 50 pound lugs so they weren't bruised. The winery does press fractioning meaning the first bit of the juice (the head) and the last bit (the tail) aren't used in the wine just the juiciest, tastiest part of the juice. They also use the traditional Champagne method to make the wine. The wine spends 30 months on the lees which gives it a creamy texture. Domaine Chante Cigale Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 2022, Rhône A.P., France: From the Rhône wine region, Domaine Chante Cigale 2022 is a rich and rounded blend of Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Clairette and Bourboulenc grapes. Lovely structure and complexity on this white wine from a lieu-dit in the Châteauneuf-Du-Pape, full-bodied and flavourful with bright citrus, dried herbs, summer-kissed white florals with a zesty citrus and lingering chalky-textured leesy mineral finish.
