Beaumes de Venise is a really unique district in the Southern Rhone. The reds are sumptuous and different from the rest of the Vaucluse department (it is the Northern tip of that area). It was granted cru AOC Status in the early 2000s because Beaumes de Venise grows similar grapes to the rest of Vaucluse, but their style is more suave and aromatic. The traditional wines of this are unique in heritage and are now recognized for their quality.
This is a white dessert wine made from Muscat; a style they have been recognized in for much longer than their reds.
It is a vin doux naturel, which is a style where fermentation is arrested with pure grape spirits before the yeast eats all of the natural sugar. What is left behind is the natural, rich, sweetness of the Muscat de Frontignan grape and a minimum alcohol of 15% (it can be as high as 20%, though that is rare).
This wine is rich, with a great mouthfeel, and has aroams and flavours of peach, apricot, orange blossom, dried flowers, almond, and vanilla.
It is made by Chapoutier; one of the undisputed masters of representing quality appellations in southern France.
Such a tasty example of Beames de Venise. Pair it wth fresh almonds, fruit salad, or even with something decadent like Peking Duck.
