Heitz Cellars was the first Napa winery (and poossibly the first notable new world example) to use vineyard designations to classify their more distinctive wines. The obvious example is their legendary 'Marth's Vineyard' Cabernet (not to be confused with Marth's Vineyard, Maryland). The 'Trailside Cabernet' gets somewhat less critical attention, though it is a great wine. It shows a little bit more value than the Martha's Vineyard. This one shows alright now, but it is definitely one for the cellar. This needs so much time to live up to its potential.

It smells of macerated blackberry, earth, pipe tobacco, damson, mulberry, black pepper, vanillin, pot pourri, and graphite. Complex, but tightly wound. It took a while to get much out of it - crimes of youth!
You can smell it a foot away from your face, so your expecting an intense flavour profile. It is intense and abundantly fruity, at this stage: toastiness from French oak wraps the abundant blackberry and black cherry in dark chocolate. There's some rustic dustiness to the tannins that gives it some charm too. Black cherry, espresso, smoke, cassis, and thyme.
Pleasurable on its own, but would go great with roast lamb and couscous. Dream pairing would be a wagyu beef burger with roast parsnip fries roasted in duck fat.
