Wolf Blass Yellow Label Cabernet Sauvignon 2015, Langhorne Creek McLaren Vale, Australia: Wolf Blass first made 250 cases of the Grey Label Shiraz, but realized he could not earn a living based on such a small production of a premium-priced wine. Thus was born Yellow Label in 1966. It was created to be a crowd pleaser with the goal of quality, character and consistency, according to current winemaker Chris Matcher. Consistency is key as Yellow Label is designed to give consumers confidence that they are getting the same signature taste each time. That was the challenge to maintain when Yellow Label moved to regional selection of grapes for this vintage rather than widespread blending. Chris says that they achieve it through careful vineyard management and barrel selection. This Cabernet offers great value and attractive aromas of blackcurrant and cassis. Pair with a juicy steak. Andreza Reserva 2014, Douro D.O.C., Portugal: Juicy and full-bodied with rich aromas of fleshy black plums, blackberries and smoke. Relatively polished in texture on the palate. On the Douro River, river bends are called "voltas" and all have individual names. The Volta of Andreza is one of the most beautiful, and this wine is named for it. The two winemakers Joao Silva e Sousa and Francisco Baptisto work with vines planted at a high altitude, which gives more structure to the wine than those grapes grown closer to the river. This is a blend of traditional varieties: Touriga Nacional and Touriga Roriz. Half the wine was aged in French and American oak barrels. Columbia Crest Winery Grand Estates Merlot 2013, Columbia Valley, Washington, United States: Now I understand why Washington is renowned for Merlot! This gorgeously rich and layered Merlot is so flavourful and interesting that even Miles in the movie Sideways would relent. It's a merlot for cabernet drinkers in it's power and concentration yet it's still smooth and supple on the palate. The reason is that merlot has tighter and smaller berry (grape) clusters so the skin to juice ratio when macerating and fermenting is lower which results in the more flavour compounds transferring to the juice (wine) before the skins are remove yet the tannins are shorter than in cabernet so you don't get that furry mouth feeling.
