Vintages Wine Picks May 2, 2009

White Wine

Mulderbosch Sauvignon Blanc 2008, W.O., Western Cape, South Africa: Vintages Wine Panel: This stylish Sauvignon Blanc is adored by wine lovers and critics alike, and is one of South Africa’s most sought-after wines. Elegant, with fresh sweet pea, lime, and wet stone aromas, this is a racy, mouth-watering wine. My note: I’ve loved this wine for many years: never a bad vintage yet. Zesty, vibrant notes of grass, chives, limes and green apples. Not a trace of oak. Pair with: goat cheese, asparagus, artichokes, oysters, grilled snapper, calamari, seafood paella, chicken in white wine sauce, chicken Caesar salad, grilled lake trout. 933424 12% XD 750 mL  $18.95 Score: 91/100. Red Wine

Loan Shiraz 2004, Barossa Valley, South Australia, Australia: Vintages Wine Panel: This was the second winery planted in the Barossa Valley and today is the only certified organic vineyard in the region. The fruit for this Shiraz is hand-picked and basket pressed, and then aged for 30 months in new American oak. Typically made in very small lots, this full-bodied, opulent, and well-structured Shiraz possesses good ageing potential (3-5+ years), but would be delicious now. This organic wine contains only 7 mg/L of free sulfur. My note: A wine packed with personality! Loaded with ripe berry goodness, rich layers of mouth-coating textures and a lovely smoky finish. Full-bodied and long-lasting. Gets my vote for best lip-smacking delicious Shiraz! Pair with: meatloaf, saUnited Statesges, shepherd’s pie, grilled organic meats. 104661 14% XD 750 mL  $37.95 Score: 92/100. May 2, 2009 Full Review Add to: Shopping List Cellar
