Situated at the center of Whidbey Island, Greenbank Cellars is a small, family-owned winery and vineyard. We specialize in Alsatian-style white wines and two-year barrel-aged reds. Greenbank Cellars winery is located on a 5-acre parcel that used to be the homestead of the Day Family. The original house burned down in 1950 and was replaced by the current cinder-block one. The barn is original and thought to have been built around the turn of the century. The large cinder-block warehouse was built later and housed a welding shop.

Frank and Betty Rayle bought the property in 1987, primarily because of the storage and workshop space in the warehouse, and that it was supplied with 3-phase power which Frank needed to run his large assortment of power equipment. The art studio/mechanical music room was added by Frank in 1993, and the blue pole building in 1996.

Grape growing in the Puget Sound growing region is a new and evolving industry, and there's no consensus of how best to do it. Growers across the region are trying new techniques to be more successful, and we at Greenbank Cellars are experimenting as well.

The initial plantings of the afore-mentioned grapes were done in 1997 and were based on the current conventional wisdom. The plants were spaced at intervals of 3-4 feet with the width between the rows of 8 feet. The width between rows is a critical calculation. The height of the vines should be equal to or slightly less than the width between rows. This assures that the plants have maximum sun exposure time as the sun sets, and aren't shaded too early by the adjacent row.
