A new structure was added in 2003 to allow the processing and bottling of up to 3000 cases per year. In addition to the Pinot Noir grape production from its vineyard, Challenger Ridge Vineyard and Cellars is presently contracting a few acres of grapes in the Yakima and Red Mountain Appellations.

The winery is currently producing Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Liberty Bell Blend, Cabernet, Syrah , Bordeaux Blend, Burgandy Blend and Pinot Noir.

The new red vintages are usually released in the Fall while the white vintages are released in the Spring. A wine barrel tasting crowns this event during an October weekend every year. Join our wine club so you get our award winning wines delivered to your home every quarter.

The vineyard is made up of five parcels planted with Pinot Noir. The parcels total 13 acres and are separated by Challenger Road and Highway 20.

The first parcel (1.6 acres) located on the upper west side was planted in early 2000 and gave some grapes in 2002 but produced significantly more in 2003. The second parcel (2.5 acres) was planted on the east side in 2002, the third (2.5 acres) to the south of Challenger Road and north of Highway 20, and finally the fourth parcel (1.2 acres) was planted in 2005 with the remainder planted in the Spring of 2009.

This area receives on average 2050 growing degree days which is ideal for growing pinot noir.

The vineyard's soil is from the Kline series. It is very gravelly sandy loam, deep, and excessively drained on alluvial fans.

The vineyard drains so well naturally that very little fungicide is necessary and no major fungi have been found to this date. Among its equipment, the vineyard uses a very special plough that works between the vines, thus avoiding the use of major herbicides.

The ownership groups vision is for an active lifestyle experience. We want everyone to come to Challenger Ridge to fish, hike, bike, learn about the vines, and the winemaking process. Or just sit back and enjoy the world of Challenger Ridge Vineyard & Cellars.

Unquenchable by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
