Sandbanks Estate Winery Sleeping Giant 2016, Prince Edward County, Ontario V.Q.A., Canada: Juicy, fleshy ripe purple plums and blackberry jam on the nose and palate. A terrific, full-bodied blend of Foch and Baco Noir grapes from Prince Edward County. Lots of mocha, oak, smoke and dark fruit. Perfect for grilled meats. Perrin & Fils Reserve 2015, Cotes Du Rhône, France: A superb value, especially at this price! This southern French red wine from the heart of the Rhone Valley is made by the Perrin family, which also produces the coveted Chateau Beaucastel and farm organically. Smoky, dark, rich and full-bodied, this is a superb wine for anyone who wants a drier style of Syrah (Shiraz). Pair with grilled meats. Apothic Inferno Red 2015, California, United States: This small batch Californian red wine blend was aged in whiskey barrels for 60 days. This lends this wine aromas and flavours of smoke, toast, spice, brown sugar and toffee. Full-bodied. The wine is aged in bourbon barrels rather than the oak usually used to age wine from France, Hungary or the US (but not bourbon oak). The bourbon oak staves (panels or strips of wood) impart a maple spice finish. This clocks in at a hefty 16% alcohol. Pair with hamburgers with relish. Alamos Selección Malbec 2014, Uco Valley, Argentina: A robust red with great depth and complexity at an excellent price point. Syrah add so much character to this blend with fleshy blackberries and cherries. It's full-bodied, balanced and smooth. Perfect for grilled meats and hard cheeses. Highly recommended. Malbec food pairings: herb-roasted lamb, pork tenderloin, cheddar cheese, spaghetti and meat balls. Stave & Steel Bourbon Barrel Aged Cabernet Sauvignon 2015, California, United States: This Californian red wine is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes grown in the Livermore Valley, a cool climate district. The wine is aged in bourbon barrels for four months rather than the oak usually used to age wine from France, Hungary or the US (but not bourbon oak). The bourbon oak staves (panels or strips of wood) impart a maple spice flavour to the wine, much like bourbon itself, with a brown sugar, vanilla toast finish. The 2014 vintage was a solid one. Aromas of dark fleshy ripe plums and some smoke. These 12- to 13-year-old vines are planted in stony soils that reflect the heat back to the vines at night.
