Reviews and Ratings

Greg Hughes rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

This wine has picked up a lot of steam, in popularity. Part of it is the stylishness of its presentation, quite simple. The blend, however, is not. It contains Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Syrah, and a dash of Charbono. It's very rich; clocking over 15.5% alcohol.
Glass-coating ruby red, with a dark core.
The aromas have a ton of oak; both French and American (30% new).
It shows it in the aromas a lot. Chestnut, chocolate, and vanilla. The fruit are pleasant, but perhaps going over to tertiary (age) already. There's lots of jammy currant and cassis. Cherry, plum, and prune, with plenty more chocolate on the finish.
If someone were to ask you what sort of wine encapsulates current tastes in North America, it would be styles like this. Unapologetically easy-going and drinkable. It could probably age 5-7 years, but freshness is essential when you are as big a wine as this. Have it sooner, rather than later. Open 2019-2022.
Very high alcohol on The Prisoner (2016), at 15.2% abv, but it has the fruit heft to handle it. The wine is a robust, muscular red blend of Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah with small amounts of Syrah, Grenache and Charbono (Bonarda) added. The label for this wine is "The Prisoner," an etching by Francisco de Goya made in 1807, a bold work depicting the harshness of life. . - Community Wine Reviews
