This wine is from Sogevinus, a famous umbrella company for several wine firms in the Douro valley (where port is born). It is made of the same varietals as Port: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinto Roriz (pronounced Roreeej, and yes it is Tempranillo).
The colour in the glass is a deeply saturated ruby, with some purple hues.
The aromas show off the Touriga varietals in full splendour. Spicebox, cassis, blackberry, plum, some baking spice, and spent coffee grounds. Really nice fruitiness.
Roriz contributes less to the aromatics and more to the fruitiness. It often has to be fermented reductively, apart from the other Douro grapes, so it retains bright fruit and some aromatics. You see its contribution in the softer fruit of this wine.
It shows on the palate too. Expect dark plum, currant, and cocoa, but also some red fruit from the Roriz (cherry, raspberry, boisenberry). Subtle tobacco and spicebox too. Perfectly ripe. Good acidity. Good price.
Put this one with parsnips, potatoes, and roast goose. If you are feeling particularly Portuguese, pilut it with cheese from Serra de Estrela.
|Trevor Sabourin - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 87/100 with the following review:|
This is a very good value, fruit-forward, easy-drinking wine. It is still very youthful, and the aromas and flavours are dominated by ripe cherry and plum, with some blackberry jam. There is well balanced oak, which adds some cocoa, vanilla, and baking spices, and there are also hints of mint, licorice, and tobacco. The wine is medium bodied, with balancing acidity and soft tannins. There is a pinch of residual sugar, but it is kept in balance nicely. This will be very versatile for food pairings. Perhaps not representative of more traditional Douro wines, but it is enjoyable and good value. It is a blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Roriz (a.k.a. tempranillo).
