If you like Barolo, try this one as it's also made from the Nebbiolo grape. This seductive, robust Italian red wine is still quite tannic with tarry black fruit and violets, so it needs cellar time. Decant 2 hours. Try it with a rack of lamb. MINE: Travaglini Gattinara (XXXX) is a full-bodied and well-priced Barolo from the Piedmont wine region. Nebbiolo grapes for this wine were hand-harvested from 12-to-45-year-old vines. This is a robust red, still quite tannic and with incredible acidity, but showing promise with its dusty rose petal nose, charry black fruit. Cellar for five to eight more years and decant two hours prior to serving. OTHER: Lynn Van Der Linde - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review: Yes, it's worth it - spend the few extra dollars for this amazing Nebbiolo! Cherry, licorice, and smoke swirl together in a heady aroma that carry through to a spicy cherry finish. Perfect with light pasta dishes or pizza. Tasted January 2018. OTHER: Greg Hughes rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review: Piemonte has more to offer than Barolo and Barbaresco. North of Langhe, in the hills, there are some super historic regions growing Nebbiolo, Vespolino, Barbera, Bonarda, Erbaluce, and a slew of other forgotten varietals. They present similar, but contrasting, wines to the famous Langhe wines (Barolo etc...). The come with a friendly price and a long history of quality and tradition. This wine is 100% Nebbiolo (although they call it Spanna) and is volcanic like its neighbours, in Ghemme and Bramaterra (very different than Barolo). It makes for a wine of intense body and explosive aromatics. Deep, sanguinary blood-red. The aromatics kick off with plenty of dried herbs, leather, balsam, strawberry, and cocoa. The flavours have some nice strawberry and choke-cherry. More savoury bitter chocolate, anise, tamarind, violet, and a refined irony, mineral-laden, tannic finish. The region is famous for truffles and risotto. Why not combine the two for a pairing? Maybe some fiddleheads in brown butter too. This wine could cellar for quite a while. This region, and its neighbours, are known for its longevity in the cellar. OTHER: Sourced from a variety of sites planted between 320 and 420 metres and ranging from 12-45 years of age, this 100% Nebbiolo saw 30 months ageing in oak before bottling. It will be a characteristically floral, elegant wine with red fruit, clove, dried fruit, mineral and spice notes. It will be approachable young, certainly younger than Barolo, but will reward a further 8-10 years' patience. (Vintages Panel, updated). - Community Wine Reviews
