Medium ruby color. Fresh and stewed strawberries aroma with a dash of white pepper and creaminess. Crisp medium-light body of red fruit with a crisp mouthfeel more reminiscent of a rosé than a red wine. Medium to soft young tannins and a medium finish of strawberry.

Garnacha or Grenache, Catalonia or Catalunya? Ah! Let's not quibble about a wine from the Torres family. An intense ruby, garnet colour coupled with aromas of sour cherry, strawberry, cinnamon, and leather invite you to sip this dusky gem. Upon yielding to temptation, flavours of cherry, red berry fruit and leather hail the mouth. This is a dry Spanish red (6 g/L residual sugar), that is medium-bodied, with moderate acidity, notable tannins and a long berry fruit and spicy-leather finish. A pleasure to drink. This wine would pair well with cured meats. An excellent wine for the price!

A good example of a Garnacha…
Presentation: Very Spanish with its bull charm, yet still classic and easy to read
Appearance: Clear, medium, ruby colour
Nose: Clean, medium nose with blueberries, violets/floral, smokiness
Taste: Dry, medium body, medium acidity, high/round tannins, notes of dark berries (cherries, blueberries), earth notes, meatiness/smoky,
Finish: Long finish
Overall impression: A good representative of Grenache, with excellent value. Would pair very well with grilled meats and vegetables.

Torres is a winery that I’m constantly on the lookout for as they do have a good contingent of quality products. The Sangre de Toro is named after my favourite God, Bacchus or for the Greek lover Dionysus, who was known as son of the bull and is the god of wine as well as other less important things. This rose is strawberry red in colour. It is creamy on the nose, quite like strawberries in cream. I really can’t get past the strawberries in cream and would say it smells more of Campino hard candies but orange and grapefruit rind also make an appearance. It is really creamy on first taste, the Campino candies (which really shouldn’t be a tasting note) disappear with a hint of red currant. The finish is sharply acidic with those red currants appearing again. The finish plays out with a good hit of unexpected bitterness. I feel like this is a Rose that could use some age. I’d suggest pairing with a nice oily pink fish grilled and slightly smoked on firewood steelhead trout and don’t forget the lemon.
