Reviews and Ratings

Stephen Beaumont CSW CWE rated this wine as 88/100 with the following review:

A little known IGT in Lombardy, the wines of Sebino are most often single grape varieties and this Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir) is a small production of just 3000 bottles that can rival many Pinots from better known regions.

Burdundian monks came to this area of Northern Italy, near to Lake d'Iseo, in the 11th century and it seems that many of the winemaking techniques of that classic French region have been maintained here. The vinfication of this excellent wine includes initial fermentation in open vats and then an 18 month maturation in French oak barrels followed by at least 4 more years in bottle before release.

Although comparisons to Cote d'Or Burgundies are difficult to avoid, there are distinguishing differences, not the least being the darker colour and the subtle tobacco notes on the nose. Pinot noir (nero) is a notoriously difficult grape to grow and vinify successfully, and is often considered the holy grail of winemakers. This example is successful in many ways, managing to layer flavours and textures but falls somewhat short as its depth of flavours tend to have sharp edges that don't quite meld together as harmoniously as the bouquet promised and the 14% alcohol is quite evident.

As with most pinot noir, this wine would really shine when sympathetically paired with food. The winemaker who guided us through a tutored tasting seminar in Toronto, suggests large game, but for me this wine would better accompany a simply roasted saddle or leg of lamb.
