Muga Prado Enea Gran Reserva 2011 is a complex and concentrated Spanish red wine with dark fruit, ripe red berry, earthy mushrooms, baking and cedar spice flavours flinty and long with food-friendly acidity. Tannins are polished. Nicely done! Pour with a mixed grill.

Food pairings: grilled lamb, bison burgers, chicken salad, pork tenderloin, autumn hodge-podge.

Jay Denney rated this wine as 97/100 with the following review:

One of my favourite all-time wines, and the 2011 vintage is no exception.

If you're not familiar with this gem, here's some background. Muga is one of the few wineries left that employs full-time in house master coopers that make all the wineries' oak barrels and vats.

Muga's two marquis wines are the Prado Enea and the Torre Muga. The Prado Enea has been my favourite, and part of that is the aging process that leads to such a complex wine This one started out for a year in large oak vats, then another 40 months in oak barrels, and then another 3-4 years of bottle aging in the cellar before being released.

Deep inky purple in colour. Rich dark berries dominate both the bouquet and palate, with notes of roasted mushroom, earth, and spice. This is full-bodied and then some, and despite being a decade old, needs considerable decanting time to relax the muscular tannins.

We had it with a classic roast beef dinner, but this would also pair well with braised lamb shanks or roasted pheasant.
