This winery is new to me. A friend gave us this Pinot Gris and I liked it right away. The crisp, fresh, citrus flavours and light weight made it a perfect match for a recent book club event and fuelled a good discussion. Served as a sipping wine it was perfect but also refreshing served with appetizers of smoked salmon, prosciutto ham, and raw veggies. I will look for more wine from Haywire.

In 2011, our Switchback Vineyard in Summerland was harvested in three
very distinct lots. Each batch was fermented separately with the two
choicest lots being selected for fermentation in our concrete eggs. Concrete
is a “new” “old” winemaking technique: cynics think it is merely a good
photo op, but at Haywire we agree with some of the best winemakers
around the world who clearly see many benefits. In addition to regular and
extended lees stirring, the shape of the “eggs” offers a continuous 24/7 lees
stirring by the egg’s internal convection currents. This really helps shape
the wine and bring more weight and complexity. The other big influence
was the maturity of the vineyard (one year older and wiser) and the fact
that 2011 was the first year towards our vineyard movement to go organic.
The grapes provided more structure and body than the previous vintage.
The wine has a crisp acidity, juicy apricot flavours and a chalky, limestone
taste along with a flinty finish which is the hallmark of clone 52. It is all
bundled up with a silver label to denoted that it is one of the vineyard
designated wines we are most proud of this season.
