Reviews and Ratings

Brent Gushowaty rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

This pinot is very pale with a garnet/ruby rim. The nose holds gentle aromas of cherries, plums and strawberries with a touch of savoury caramel and forest floor. On the palate, it shows a similar blend of savoury red fruits as on the nose. The structure is very graceful, with fruit complexity and a medium to medium plus fruit intensity. The best feature here is the combination of balanced elegance with a richer-than-typical depth of flavour for a B.C. pinot noir. The flavours maintain well through a fairly long finish. Should age well and develop further. Terrific value here.

The grapes were sourced from Fort Berens Estate Winery’s vineyard (45%) and The Rise Vineyards (55%)in Vernon. During fermentation 25% of the grape clusters were left whole and placed in the bottom of the fermenter. The remaining grapes were crushed and layered on top. The whole cluster portion underwent a carbonic fermentation which contributes to the soft fruit complexity here. The spontaneous fermentation utilized native yeasts. Production was 131 cases.

The wine won a gold medal at the 2018 British Columbia Lieutenant Governor’s Wine Awards

Fort Berens is the first winery established in the new GI Lillooet wine region (GI stands for Geographical Indications - B.C.'s appellation). The Lillooet GI covers a 100 km stretch of the interior Fraser River valley from Pavilion in the north to Kanaka Bar in the south with an upper elevation of approximately 1,000 m,. though most viticulture takes place below 500 m. The climate is similar to the Okanagan Valley with long, hot, dry summers, a high number of degree days but a lower overall Summer temperature due to its cooler nights.

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
