Sweet purple and black plums on the nose with dark spices. Juicy, smooth, supple and full-bodied. This Californian Zinfandel demands barbecued meats. The small batch Zin is aged in new and used bourbon oak barrels, which adds a lick of spice and caramel on the finish. OTHER: It is a deep garnet color in the glass with aromas of ripe black fruit, including plum and blackberries, with hints of caramel and vanilla. It tastes like a typical Zinfandel, with loads of ripe fruit flavors, but the taste starts off with a soft mouthfeel followed by rounded tannins and spice. It is a wonderful wine for sipping. - Community Wine Reviews

Luc Delorme rated this wine as 88/100 with the following review:

This is a big, bold Californian Zinfandel, as we've come to expect them. Not overly complex, but certainly pleasing. Medium ruby in colour, this wine is all fruit on the nose, with a hint of alcohol that gives away its 15.4% strength. Berries, cherries and booze, oh my!

The palate follows as expected, with some secondary notes from the aging in bourbon barrels, but still very fruit-forward. Tannins are minimal, and acid is low, but sufficient to keep the wine from being flabby. The finish is fairly long, with lingering fruit and alcohol.

This wine is as far from Old World as can be. Some people will like that, others won't. I served this with a hearty, spicy mole-style chili and it worked great. This could easily be consumed without food as well.

I liked this wine, and it was what I expected and wanted as a pairing. Not sure it's worth $30 though; there are a lot of good Zins that cost less.
Jane Staples - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 88/100 with the following review:

This Mendocino, California Zinfandel was made in small-batches and aged in bourbon barrels. Bright garnet with dark berry, vanilla, spice aromatics and flavours, with elements of dried herbs, charred vanilla and caramel from the bourbon barrels. Would be a great gift for a Zinfandel lover who also loves a big barbequed steak.
Tasted April 2017
Barrel ageing wines and beers in old Bourbon, rum or Sherry barrels is becoming de rigueur and adds another dimension to the wine while mingling and mellowing out flavours. Such is the case with this Zinfandel from California's Fetzer Vineyards, 1000 Stories Bourbon Barrel Aged (2014). The Zin is a deep garnet color in the glass showing ripe black fruit, butterscotch and vanilla on the palate. Make no mistake that this wine is over 15% alcohol, but the barrel ageing has softened the heat. - Community Wine Reviews
