Keith Robinson reviewed this wine as follows:

2012 Alphonse Mellot 'La Moussiére'

Price: $35

Availability: Richmond Hill, J. Webb

Assessed by: Keith Robinson

Tasted: October 2014

Product Details: Sancerre, France 13% ABV 100% Sauvignon Blanc

For 500 years the Mellot family has been making wine in the village of Sancerre in the Loire Valley. The current Alphonse Mellot is their 19th generation of wine-makers.

The village of Sancerre rises on a mound of limestone and clay to produce, along with its neighbour, Pouilly Fume, the world's prototype examples of Sauvignon Blanc. At their best Sancerre can be intensely perfumed, wild, flinty and lean. And they can be pair magically with a wide range of edible fare.

Grapes certified biodynamically and organically grown.

The tasting: Light gold with green tints. Beautiful nose of white flowers and intense flint. On the palate, surprisingly broad and rich, some leesy baby-fat. We successfully paired this wonderful wine with charcuterie, grilled Coho salmon, and duck confit, much richer fare then I expected a Sancerre to handle.

'Elegance' is of the most overused words in wine writing – reviews as well as marketing. Such and such wine has elegance; that wine has a lot of elegance; the winemaker puts elegance in his wine. As if elegance were an ingredient to add or subtract, rather than a quality of the whole.

Tasted both alone and at table, 'La Moussiére' completely charmed me and my dining partners.
'La Moussiére' is a wine of elegance – pleasing, graceful, nuanced yet deceptively simple.

Drink now or age ten years. Do not over-chill. Slightly below room temperature is fine – 14 or 15°. Do not stifle 'La Moussiére'! In fact this is one white I recommend decanting. Set it free!

Food pairing: As noted, 'La Moussiére' has the weight to stand up to most anything short of red meat and the acidity to cut through fatty foods.

Movie pairing: Sabrina

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
