A consistently great Merlot from Columbia Crest's H3. The difference between daytime and night time temperatures in this eastern Washington state wine region is the reason why Merlots like this one are terrific and they can be even more rich and intense than their Cabernet Sauvignon based wines. H3 is a good example of a big, bold, juicy and full-bodied Merlot from this area. Smoky with dark plum, mulberry, savoury spice and mocha-vanilla flavours on the palate and dangerously smooth. So is the price.

Merlot food pairings: grilled pork chops, pepper steak, duck, grilled lamb, cheese.

Reviews and Ratings

Jennifer Havers - WSET Level 3 rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

Year after year, this wine over-delivers on taste and value. Aromas of black plum, pepper, evergreen branches, and mocha. Full bodied, smooth on the palate, with soft tannins, and medium acidity. Fruit flavours are rounded and juicy, and there is a hint of mocha and spice on the finish. Enjoy with grilled meats.

finevines90 rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

Deep purple in the glass. Warm fresh baked bread and leather on the nose and pronounced oak. Deep dark berry and rich plum flavour and and incredible silky smooth palate. Soft and warming mouthfeel. Excellent merlot.
From Horse Heaven Hills, Columbia Valley wine region, Columbia Crest H3 2017 Merlot is a smoky, spicy Merlot with spiced plum, dark chocolate, espresso and vanilla flavours finishing long and satisfying on the palate. In October, the last weeks prior to harvest are key or ripening the grapes with nighttime temperature plummeting from 35 degrees in the day to just 20 degrees at night which allows for ripening during the day but then preserve freshness and natural acidity during the night. - Community Wine Reviews
