Wolf Blass Black Label 2010, South Australia, Australia: A spectacular red wine in every dimension: complexity, concentration of flavour, layering, and length of finish. The power and intensity is here but not any heaviness or extraction of harsh flavour or tannin. This robust red wine Australian blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec grapes. The 1998 vintage of this wine won Australia's most coveted wine award, Jimmy Watson Trophy. This is a cellar-worthy wine, but it will also drink well now. Highly recommended. Pirramimma Petit Verdot 2012, South Australia, Australia: The alcoholic warmth is on the nose of this robust Australian red wine, but so too is fleshy black fruit, dark spice and toasty oak to carry it. Henry of Pelham Reserve Baco Noir 2012, Niagara, Ontario V.Q.A., Canada: Henry of Pelham does Baco Noir right: this is best of class. Brooding aromas of black and purple plum, blackberries and blueberries wrapped in smoke. Supple and full-bodied. The 2012 vintage was another strong one for Ontario producers, and especially this winery. Could this be the ultimate hamburger wine? I think so as this wine won the beef category for The Great Canadian Wine Match people's choice awards this year. Well-structured with a solid finish. Try it tonight. Santa Carolina Gran Reserva Petit Verdot 2012, Rapel Valley, Chile: An attractive red wine made from an obscure red grape that's often part of Bordeaux blends to add colour and heft. Aromas of dark fruit and a savoury mid-palate note. A good grip on the palate, so decant 1 hour. You can't beat the price for the quality. Curious about Petit Verdot as a grape and wine? No better way to understand it than to try it as a stand-alone wine like this one rather than in a blend. Try it with meat lasagna. Drink: 2013-2017. 7484 14.50% XD 750 mL  $15.95 Score: 88/100. Cathedral Cellar Petit Verdot 2013, South Africa: A smoky, savoury, seductive South African red wine made from the lesser known Petit Verdot grape. This is on the grapes in Bordeaux blends, but here it stands alone in a smoldering, smoky rendition. Fabulous taste and quality for this price point. The wine was aged for 16 months in French oak barrels of which 70% was first fill. Pair this beauty with wild game meats and hard flavourful cheeses. Mulderbosch Faithful Hound Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Petit Verdot Malbec Cabernet Franc 2011, Stellenbosch W.O., South Africa: The 2011 vintage was a spectacular one for this winery. In particular, the Faithful Hound red wine blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc grapes is greatly benefiting from Mulderbosch's new, dynamic winemaker, Adam Mason. As well, there's a new owner, American Charles Banks, and together they are creating a tremendous amount of energy, vision and great wine together. The Faithful Hound offers enticing aromas of black, smoky fruit and a savoury, mouth-watering core. Some cedar notes in the background and on the finish. Perfect for prime rib or a rare steak. Ravenswood Old Vine Zinfandel 2010, Sonoma County, California, United States: You can taste the old vine character in the complexity of this wine. Gorgeously complex with layers of dark red fruit and some smoke. Terrific finish.  This should be your go-to party wine as it'll please so many palates with its berry vibrancy yet no heavy-handed oak treatment. One of California's flagship producers of zinfandel, and it shows in the glass. Drink: 2012-2017. 673798 14.50% XD 750 mL  $21.95 Score: 92/100. February 1, 2014 Top Rated Red Wine.
