Catena Zapata Cabernet Sauvignon 2010, High Mountain Vines, Mendoza, Argentina: A full-bodied red with enticing aromas of dark fruit and smoke on the nose. Supremely satisfying velvet texture with gorgeously fleshy black plums and dark berries. Perfect for dinner parties or casual gatherings. This winery sources its Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from four different vineyards in the Andes for greater complexity. Lovely spice and pepper on the finish. Try with hearty meat dishes. Herencia Altés Negra Garnatxa 2011, D.O., Terra Alta, Spain: Another incredible value and full-throttle wine made from 100% Grenache from very old vines and aged completely in concrete, is a naked, unadulterated, unmanipulated effort with great minerality from the chalky, limestone soils and an intensity and richness from the old vines that are normally found in $50+ wines. Loaded with black cherry liqueur, dark spices and anise. Full-bodied and ultra-smooth. Love Aussie shiraz or big chateauneuf-du-pape? Try this. Honkin big and satisfying.
