Lovely green apple notes with some toasted hazelnut on the finish from the barrel fermentation and aging. There's fresh baked bread notes sprinkled with some cinnamon aromas on the finish. Lovely! MacMurray Estate Vineyards Pinot Noir 2012, Russian River Valley, Sonoma County, California, United States: Good balance with black cherry aromas and flavours but not overly sweet. Medium-bodied and smooth and a fair price for this quality, especially for Pinot Noir, which is always expensive because it's so difficult to grow. This hails from one of California's cool climate regions in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma which creates the balance in the wine from cool nights. Produced by Ernest & Julio Gallo, this Californian Pinot Noir offers the balance that's the signature of the Sonoma region. The original MacMurray homestead was settled 150 years ago. Rancho Zabaco Zinfandel 2013, Sonoma County, California, United States: This Californian red wine is made from the state's classic red grape Zinfandel, which grows on the winery's Heritage Vines (old vines). Rancho Zabacho is named for the original Mexican land grants in northern Sonoma. Savoury, juicy and delicious with terrific aromas and flavours of blackberry, black raspberry and lip-smacking tasty spice. Lovely balance: not over-the-top. Just what you want for the BBQ. Don't limit yourself to pre-dinner toasts and New Year's Eve with this terrific bubbly: drink it throughout the meal and throughout the year. In fact, why not make a resolution to do so now? The wine was matured for 16 months in a combination of American, French and other European oak barrels, which imparts some lovely spicy, smoky coffee notes. Extraordinary balance and complexity. Layers of flavour with cassis, blackcurrant and mocha predominating. Full-bodied with a lovely length on the finish. Pair with a juicy steak.
