José de Sousa 2017, Alentejo, Portugal: From the Alentejo, José de Sousa 2017 is a full-bodied red made from Grand Noir, Trincadeira and Aragonêz wine grapes and produced by José Maria da Fonseca. Look for dark cherry, plum, dried fruit, earthy florals, dried tobacco leaf, oak spice and smoky vanilla flavours on the palate. A portion of the wine was made in amphorae with the balance in stainless-steel tanks. The wine was aged up to eight months in new American and French oak barrels. Cabeça de Toiro Reserva 2017, Tejo D.O.C., Portugal: From the Tejo wine region, Cabeça de Toiro Reserva 2017 is excellent value at $18. A blend of Syrah, Castelão and Touriga Nacional aged nine months in French oak barrels. The wine is dry, medium-plus-bodied and zesty on the palate with ripe dark fruits, savoury herbs, dried sweet tobacco and toasty oak spice flavours. Tannins are firm.
