Columbia Crest Winery H3 Cabernet Sauvignon 2014, Washington, United States: This Washington state Cabernet yields only 3 tons per acre as compared to the entry level Columbia Crest wines at 4.5 tons per acre. That means that the H3 line has more power and concentration, yet also great finesse. Columbia Crest owns this label: the winery is the oldest in Washington state and first planted grapes in 1978. This wine features notes of black cherry and spice. Firm structure. Decant 102 hours. Pair with beef tenderloin. Drink: 2015-2020. 210047 14% D 750 mL  $22.95 Score: 90/100. 14 Hands Cabernet Sauvignon 2014, Columbia Valley, Washington, United States: The horses on the label are a tribute to the wild horses that once roamed the Hose Heaven Hills wine region. They were approximately 14 hands tall: small but sturdy and strong, known for their unbridled strength and freedom. Aromas of coffee, mocha and spice as well as fleshy blackberry. The wine is aged in American oak barrels for 14 months and that that provide a succulently rich/sweet frame and carry the tannins to an excellent place of balance. The wine is very approachable. Pair with a rare steak. Drink: 2015-2021. 70573 13% XD 750 mL  $18.95 Score: 90/100. March 18, 2017 Best Value Red Wine. Full Review
Columbia Crest Winery Grand Estates Merlot 2013, Columbia Valley, Washington, United States: Now I understand why Washington is renowned for Merlot! This gorgeously rich and layered Merlot is so flavourful and interesting that even Miles in the movie Sideways would relent. It's a merlot for cabernet drinkers in it's power and concentration yet it's still smooth and supple on the palate. The reason is that merlot has tighter and smaller berry (grape) clusters so the skin to juice ratio when macerating and fermenting is lower which results in the more flavour compounds transferring to the juice (wine) before the skins are remove yet the tannins are shorter than in cabernet so you don't get that furry mouth feeling. Great weight, structure and finish. Pair this with veal shank or duck. Drink: 2014-2018. 454835  13.50% D 750 mL  $17.95 Score: 91/100. March 3, 2017 Best Value Red Wine.
