Gérard Bertrand Languedoc Syrah Grenache 2017, Languedoc A.P., France: A robust southern French red wine blend of Syrah and Grenache grapes, with vines planted closer to the Mediterranean sea and therefore there are more spice accents in the finished wine along with red berries and pepper. Although the Languedoc is the world's largest wine region with 235,000 acres, it is not one homogenous mass or style wine-wise. There are actually 5 sub-climates and more than 50 different grapes used in varying blends. Compare that to the 5 grapes used in Bordeaux. There are also 8 different and distinctive winds that blow through the vines here as compared to one in the Rhone, the Mistral. Pair with steak and hamburgers. Drink: 2019-2024. 413237 14.50% D 750 mL  $18.95 Score: 91/100. December 3, 2020 Best Value Red Wine. Voluptuous Veal Wine Full Review

Mauro Alberello Primitivo 2015, Puglia I.G.T., Italy: Savoury and sweet with black fruit flavours. Alberello means "bush vine" and is a traditional vine training method in Italy. Juicy and full-bodied with lots of acidity on the palate of this Italian red wine made from Primitivo grapes (aka Zinfandel). Black raspberry and berry. Pair with meat lovers' pizza. Drink: 2015-2018. 441790 13.50% D 750 mL  $11.95 Score: 87/100. November 9, 2016 Best Value Red Wine. Complete Cheese Pizza Wine Full Review
Balbás Reserva 2001, Ribera Del Duero D.O., Spain: The Vintages catalogue says this is 2005, but we tasted 2003. This full-bodied Spanish red wine has a good grip on the palate is offers more earthy, smoky, dusty aromas and flavours than fruity ones. Dry and subtle, with tanned leather and cigar box and made from the traditional Tempranillo grape. This DO wine finished with dry tobacco and cedar. Decant for 2 hours and pair with lamb and rosemary. Drink: 2014-2019. 85183 14% D 750 mL  $29.95 Score: 90/100. February 7, 2015 Full Review

Barón de Ley Gran Reserva Tempranillo 2001, Rioja, DOC, Spain: This is a remarkable wine -- please save me some as I intend to get a couple of cases. Matures aromas of leather, cigar box, dried herbs and black plums. It's rare to get a mature wine like this on a release, snap it up but not too much. Drink: 2012-2022. 642496 13% D 750 mL  $34.95 Score: 94/100. December 3, 2020 Top Rated Red Wine. Full Review

Monasterio De Las Viñas Garnacha Blend Gran Reserva 2001, D.O. Carinena, Spain: Vintages Wine Panel: A blend of Garnacha (Grenache), Tempranillo, Cariñena and Cabernet Sauvignon, this fine Gran Reserva is just approaching its prime drinking window. Featuring dried plum, raspberry, leather and vanilla aromas and flavours, this wine is clearly being released now to take advantage of its near-perfect maturity. My note: Mouth-watering, delicious red. Full-bodied, but not heavy with notes of ripe dark red fruit. Drink: 2008-2012. 82024 13% D 750 mL  $21.95 Score: 90/100. August 30, 2008 Full Review
Coto De Imaz Rioja Reserva 2001, D.O.C.A., Spain: Vintages Wine Panel: A wonderful Reserva with floral, black cherry and spice aromas and flavours. Barón de Ley Gran Reserva Tempranillo 2000, D.O.C.A., Rioja, Spain: We’ve got leather and cigar box and the heady mixture of a mature wine to be sipped contemplatively in a wood-paneled study. Love this style and it’s such a rarity these days to taste a mature wine… everything is all fruit, right now. Try it and see what I mean. A long savoury, smoky finish. Drink: 2010-2015. 642496 13% D 750 mL  $34.95 Score: 93/100. December 11, 2010 Top Rated Red Wine. Full Review
