d'Arenberg The Footbolt Shiraz 2016, Mclaren Vale, South Australia, Australia: d'Arenberg's The Footbolt 2016 is a consistent, pleasing, full-bodied Shiraz with its hallmark dark berry, blackberry and eucalyptus flavours on the palate. Great value under $20 as well. Not fined or filtered the wine is matured for 12-18 months in a combination of French and American oak. Fermentation was stopped two-thirds of the way through and juice was not filtered. "Footbolt" is named in honour of the racehorse that founder Joseph Osborn had to sell in order to start the d'Arenberg winery in 1912. Since 1912, the Osborn family has farmed vineyards in the McLaren Vale. Perfect with grilled steaks on the grill, but can easily cellar for three more years to start showing its best. San Pedro 1865 Cabernet Sauvignon 2016, Maipo Valley, Chile: Each of the wines from the 1865 portfolio is made from its own selected vineyard planted with the particular grape in mind. This gorgeous Chilean Cabernet is full-bodied with fleshy ripe blackberries. Lots of dark fruit flavour and a long satisfying finish. This Cabernet is planted in the winery's Alto Maipo vineyard planted 40 years ago with vines propagated by massal selection. Average summer high temperatures hover around 30 degrees Celsius or 86 degrees Fahrenheit. The vines are in clay-loam soils in an alluvial terrace. Pair with hearty meat dishes.
