Château Vincens Origine Malbec 2014, Cahors, Southewest A.C., France: Smooth and juicy with campfire aromas on the nose. Very black in colour with high-toned acidity. A full-bodied southern French red wine from the region of Cahors and made from the Malbec grape, with mocha-dark chocolate aromas from oak aging and fleshy black fruit. Great for pizza. This robust Cahors red wine almost has some leanings toward Californian Zinfandel, but still is dark and smoky in a Cahors sort of way. Densely tannic and brooding: decant for 2 hours. Boutari Naoussa Xinomavro 2015, Naoussa, Macedonia P.D.O., Greece: Full-bodied, smooth and juicy with aromas of dried red fruits. Lots of acidity for a wide range of dishes from lamb with rosemary to pork tenderloin. Earthy and dry. Classic Old World style, not fruit-forward. Some dark spices on the finish makes it ideal for hearty meat dishes. This has the signature of Xinomavro, the leading red grape in modern Greek wines, with cedar and black olive notes. Loads of mouth-watering acidity for lamb. Excellent for the price. The Naoussa gets about 1 year aging in French oak barrels. The Chief Oenologist Yiannis Voyatzis has a deft hand on this wine. Liberty School Zinfandel 2012, California, United States: This robust Californian red wine offers attractive aromas of sweet purple plums and blueberries and coffee mocha toast from oak aging. It's succulent, smooth, lip-smacking delicious and full-bodied. Lots of juicy black raspberry on the finish will have you coming back for another top up. The winery practises aggressive canopy management, trimming back the leaves and vegetation on the vines so that more nutrients go to the grapes, which in turn become more concentrated in flavour. This is a terrific wine for movie night, especially if you're having meat lovers' or pepperoni pizza. Finishes with black plums and dark spice.
