Heartland Stickleback Red Ben Glaetzer 2010, South Australia, Australia: Incredible price for this quality. Loaded with big black fruit and lots of mouth-watering acidity. Great wine for big meals, especially those involving Winemaker Ben Glaetzer also makes the Mitolo wines in McLaren Vale and the Heartland wines in the Langhorne Creek region. Stickleback is the Heartland winery’s entry-level red wine. It’s mostly made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz gapes with a dash of Dolcetto and Lagrein grapes. Food pairings: steak. Liberty School Zinfandel 2010, Pasa Robles, California, United States: This robust red offers attractive aromas of fleshy ripe purple plums and blueberries. It's succulent, smooth, lip-smacking delicious and full-bodied. Lots of juicy black raspberry on the finish will have you coming back for another top up. The winery practises aggressive canopy management, trimming back the leaves and vegetation on the vines so that more nutrients go to the grapes, which in turn become more concentrated in flavour. Zinfandel is one of the flagship red wines of California, even though it also has its roots in Europe. Freemark Abbey Merlot 2010, Napa Valley, California, United States: Fleshy yet subtle, full-bodied yet balanced. Loaded with ripe black plums. Lots of layers of pleasure. This wine is made mostly from Merlot Grapes with some Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Syrah. Long, satisfying pleasant finish. Decant for an hour for maximum pleasure. Terrific finish.  This should be your go-to party wine as it'll please so many palates with its berry vibrancy yet no heavy-handed oak treatment. Akarua Pinot Noir 2011, Central Otago, South Island, New Zealand: A gloriously vibrant pinot noir that's medium-bodied and packed with flavour. A rich, silky Pinot bursting with ripe cherries and wild berries. Small kick of spice. Full-bodied. Closed with a screwcap. Try it tonight with roast chicken, and invite me along please. OTHER: The 2011 Pinot Noir was aged 10 months in French oak, 30% new. Medium to deep ruby-purple in color, it offers a good intensity of black berry, mulberry and red plum notes with hints of cedar, toast, black pepper and baking spices. Medium to full-bodied with a medium level of grainy tannins, it has a medium to high level of acid lifting the pure berry flavors and finishing long. Delicious now, it should cellar to 2017+.
