Stags' Leap Winery Chardonnay 2020, Napa Valley, California, United States: Stags' Leap Winery 2020 Chardonnay is produced by winemaker Christophe Paubert. The Chardonnay grapes for this vintage were fermented in stainless-steel tank and 25% of the juice was also stored in stainless steel. He fermented another 25% of the Chardonnay in new French oak barrels with the balance in previous use French oak barrels. No malo was permitted on this Chardonnay and after several months, the three wines were blended and bottled giving this beautiful Chardonnay enough diversity and complexity but also allowing to shine on its own. Fresh and bright with aromas and layers of green apple, lemon zest, fresh melon, vanilla and Christmas cake baking spice with a kiss of smoke on a very long and mineral note. Just superb! Inniskillin Montague Vineyard Chardonnay 2021, Four Mile Creek, Niagara ON The Lake, Ontario V.Q.A., Canada: Inniskillin Montague Vineyard 2021 single vineyard Chardonnay is produced from grapes sourced from Four Mile Creek sub-appellation located on the Eastern side of the Niagara. The vines were planted in 1982 and the vineyard is one of the oldest sites in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The Chardonnay vines thrive in clay loam pockets on top of the Queenston Formation (bedrock that forms a significant piece of Ontario) and are exposed to intensely dry summer heat. That heat, along with the rapid cooling which takes place at night, produces extremely ripe and tropical-fruit Chards with structure and plenty of aromatics. Dry, medium-bodied and balanced with juicy acidity, this vintage is layered with ripe apple, pear butter, tropical fruit, toast, oak spice and vanilla flavours smooth, silky and so long on the palate.
