Darlene Myers rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

I do love all the fruitiness and food friendliness of an Old Vine Zinfandel, and this Gnarly Head is easy to drink, whether with food or all by itself. The name Gnarly Head comes from the older Zinfandel vines in California which were 'head pruned', which means the shoots that produce the grapes grow directly out of the head to the trunk with no trellis system. These older vines tend to produce fewer grapes which means the flavor is more intense. This wine has flavors of jammy plums, blackberries and spice on the palate. You will also detect pepper and some toasted oak which compliments any meat done on the grill. The 2012 is still a bit young and I feel will improve with age.
