The Bricco Fiasco and San Rocco Crus are vinified in exactly the same fashion (fermented in steel and aged in French barriques of which 20% are new) and are a fascinating study in terroir yielding dramatically different results owing to their situation in different villages the former from Castiglione Falletto, having white calcareous soils, and the latter from Serralunga d’Alba is grown in a combination of clay and calcaire. The Margheria Cru is composed of clay and tufaceous marls and is aged in large cask rather than the barriques used in the Bricco Fiasco and San Rocco. Interestingly, this Cru is also the source for Gaja’s Sperss.

Posted with permission of the LCBO.

The Azelia estate is still many a Barolo lover’s secret, established in Castiglione Falletto in 1920 by Cavalier Lorenzo Scavino, great-grandfather of the present proprietor Luigi Scavino.
