The Azelia estate is still many a Barolo lover’s secret, established in Castiglione Falletto in 1920 by Cavalier Lorenzo Scavino, great-grandfather of the present proprietor Luigi Scavino. Today the family owns 16 hectares planted to Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto. Castiglione Falletto is home to the famed Bricco Fiasco, the historical Cru of the estate, where Luigi\u2019s father planted vines in the 1940\u2019s.\u00a0 There are also 3 prized vineyards in Serralunga d’Alba, from which San Rocco, Margheria and Voghera Brea are produced.<\/p>\n

The Crus<\/strong>
\nVoghera Brea is a 1 hectare plot of 65 year old vines and this Riserva wine is only produced in the best vintages. The Bricco Fiasco and San Rocco Crus are vinified in exactly the same fashion (fermented in steel and aged in French barriques of which 20% are new) and are a fascinating study in terroir yielding dramatically different results owing to their situation in different villages the former from Castiglione Falletto, having white calcareous soils, and the latter from Serralunga d\u2019Alba is grown in a combination of clay and calcaire. The Margheria Cru is composed of clay and tufaceous marls and is aged in large cask rather than the barriques used in the Bricco Fiasco and San Rocco.\u00a0 Interestingly, this Cru is also the source for Gaja\u2019s Sperss.<\/p>\n
