The complex nose carries tones of vanilla, apple, citrus, toasted almond, butterscotch and ripe fruit. The palate is equally rich and rewarding, with great structure and balance throughout. Lively acidity carries through to the end of the lip-smacking finish. Delicious now or it will evolve over 5 years into an even more intriguing experience. My note: Stunning wine! Loaded with green apple and white peach with some butter and smoke and a long almond-infused finish. Pair with: lightly seasoned chicken dishes, fuller-flavoured fish. There is sufficient tannic grip. My note: Such a consistent producer: this wine is often on restaurant lists. Black fruit and lots of toasty oak. Rich and flavourful yet not over-the-top. Great for potluck get-togethers. Pair with: rich meat-based pasta sauces, roast beef, gourmet burgers. 714816 13.5% XD 750 mL $15.95 Score: 89/100

2006 Barba Vignafranca Montepulciano D’abruzzo, D.O.C., Abruzzo, Italy

Some kind of wonderful! Savory and juicy with mocha and dark red fruit. Smooth and full-bodied and ready for any Italian dish or many others. Love this style: gets you out of your red wine rut, and you know, you should.
