{"id":775,"date":"2011-03-14T17:58:38","date_gmt":"2011-03-14T21:58:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/wineblog\/?p=775"},"modified":"2013-02-15T11:54:01","modified_gmt":"2013-02-15T16:54:01","slug":"sommelier-programs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/blog\/sommelier-programs\/","title":{"rendered":"Sommelier Programs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/admin\/book1\/storage\/interview_299.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Whether you are looking to impress your next date, to be the wine expert in the family or for a serious career change, Ottawa\u2019s Algonquin College has you covered.<\/p>\n<p>The college\u2019s reputable Sommelier Certificate Program was initially developed in response to an increased demand for properly trained wine professionals.<\/p>\n<p>Enrico DeFrancesco, the academic co-ordinator of the Algonquin sommelier program, says that studying wine is no longer the pretentious act it once was.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is wine education done in a fun learning environment, not done in an aggressive manner,\u201d he said. \u201cWe make leaning about wine fun and interactive \u2014 half the time in lecture and half the time tasting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the program\u2019s main goal is to supply restaurants with qualified sommeliers to engineer wine lists, a number of different employment options are available to graduates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents go on to be product consultants with the LCBO, wine representatives, vineyard management, wine authors or reviewers,\u201d said DeFrancesco. \u201cIf people are interested in becoming a winemaker, the option is there to continue their education in Niagara.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one knows what following an interest can lead to better that graduate Debbi Trenholm. While working in the high-tech sector, Trenholm\u2019s keenness for wine led her to taking a single wine class at Algonquin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the next two years, I took all the classes and graduated,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Trenholm now combines her business background with her love of wine as president of her own wine marketing business, Savvy Company. Savvy employs 11 accredited sommeliers \u2014 all Algonquin graduates \u2014 to contribute to the various aspects of the wine business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we are lucky in Ottawa, to have a sommelier program of this calibre,\u201d said Trenholm. \u201cIf it wasn\u2019t for the course, I wouldn\u2019t have my business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among the course\u2019s other well-known graduates is Ottawa restaurateur Stephen Beckta, the man responsible for Beckta Dining and Wine and the newly opened ByWard attraction, Play.<\/p>\n<p>Going high-tech with her education, Natalie MacLean created the number one wine app on iTunes.
