href=\"https:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/winepicks\/search\/?dosearch=set&amp;text=Gruner+Veltliner&amp;reviewfilter=0&amp;stamp=637725779355448891&amp;page=2&amp;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gruner Veltliner<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/winepicks\/search\/?dosearch=set&amp;jmp=set&amp;text=Blaufr%C3%A4nkisch#searchresults\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Blaufrankisch<\/a><\/strong>, a contestant would surely respond promptly with, &#8220;What are two of Austria\u2019s most well-known varieties?&#8221;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 17px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-54477\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/winepicks\/advancedsearch\/?dosearch=set&amp;country=Austria&amp;reviewfilter=0&amp;stamp=637726083583798446&amp;jmp=set&amp;#searchresults\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Austria<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s terroir, one that I had the pleasure of tasting through following <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.austrianwine.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Austrian Wine<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s June 2021 Ontario online tasting event that included wine samples, public seminars, and private video meetings with winemakers.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/winepicks\/advancedsearch\/?dosearch=set&amp;country=Austria&amp;reviewfilter=0&amp;stamp=637726083583798446&amp;jmp=set&amp;#searchresults\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Austria<\/a><\/strong> is known mostly for fresh, pure white wines and exceptional value for money in terms of price points. 40 grape varieties (26 white and 14 red) are approved to produce <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/winepicks\/advancedsearch\/?dosearch=set&amp;text=Qualit%c3%a4tswein&amp;country=Austria&amp;reviewfilter=0&amp;stamp=637726117708059341&amp;jmp=set&amp;#searchresults\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Qualit\u00e4tswein<\/a><\/strong> (quality wine), <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/winepicks\/advancedsearch\/?dosearch=set&amp;text=Pr%c3%a4dikatswein&amp;country=Austria&amp;reviewfilter=0&amp;stamp=637726118653338307&amp;jmp=set&amp;#searchresults\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pr\u00e4dikatswein<\/a><\/strong> (Qualit\u00e4tswein with a special level of ripeness and\/or method of production) and Landwein in Austria\u2019s 46,000 hectares of vineyards.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 18px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.austrianvineyards.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-54437\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Riesling<\/a><\/strong>, Pinot Blanc (Weissburgunder), <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/winepicks\/search\/?dosearch=set&amp;jmp=set&amp;text=Sauvignon+Blanc#searchresults\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sauvignon Blanc<\/a><\/strong>, Chardonnay, Muscat Blanc \u00e0 Petits Grains (Gelber Muskateller), <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/winepicks\/advancedsearch\/?dosearch=set&amp;text=Pinot+Noir&amp;country=Austria&amp;reviewfilter=0&amp;stamp=637726102086359722&amp;jmp=set&amp;#searchresults\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pinot Noir<\/a><\/strong>, Merlot, Cabernet and Syrah will likely ring a bell to most wine aficionados, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/winepicks\/advancedsearch\/?dosearch=set&amp;country=Austria&amp;reviewfilter=0&amp;stamp=637726083583798446&amp;jmp=set&amp;#searchresults\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Austria<\/a><\/strong> is also increasingly known for both lesser-known international varieties such as Muskateller and Traminer, and for its portfolio of local grape varieties.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In addition to the ubiquitous <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/winepicks\/search\/?dosearch=set&amp;text=Gruner+Veltliner&amp;reviewfilter=0&amp;stamp=637725779355448891&amp;page=2&amp;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gr\u00fcner Veltliner<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/winepicks\/search\/?dosearch=set&amp;jmp=set&amp;text=Blaufr%C3%A4nkisch#searchresults\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Blaufr\u00e4nkisch<\/a><\/strong>, some lesser-known whites include Welschriesling, Rotgipfler, Neuburger, Roter Veltliner and Zierfandler. This diacritical mark, a mere two dots, is simply intended to communicate a particular pronunciation of the vowel it tops. Instead, it often signals to consumers that they must flee in terror to the nearest bottle of pinot grigio. Now known for having successfully pivoted away from mass-produced and marketed wines and for creativity, innovation, and fresh wines.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>White and red, show terroir and regional typicity as well as for its \u2018virage\u2019 towards greener, organic, sustainable, and biodynamic farming practices. Complex as it evolves, original and absolutely stunning, paired beautifully with a cheese and charcuterie board. 93 Points<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Weingut Weinrieder Reserve Gr\u00fcner Veltliner 2016<\/strong> \u2013 Golden yellow in colour, complex and layered this is a wine to savor slowly. Citrus, apple, hay and grass on the nose, the palate follows with a smoky earthiness and creamy notes. A balance of lush and bright acidity it has a long finish with a nice, light zip of green pepper at the end. Enjoyed it on its own but would be lovely with simple poached fish in cream sauce. Here though is a beautiful example of an aromatic, dry, intense, fruity (quince, lychee, elderberry), complex white with a long, lingering finish. Offset a rich, creamy sheep cheese (Brebirousse d\u2019Argental) perfectly. 92 Points<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Weingut Stadlmann Igeln Zierfandler Ried 2016<\/strong> \u2013 A lush, honeyed gold colour, this single-variety Zierfandler (a little-planted and little-known variety found in Lower Austria\u2019s Thermenregion) is ripe, lush, intense, and distinctive. A varietal that was new to me and one that I will be searching out in the future. 91 Points<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Weingut Weinrieder Birthal Weissburgunder 2017<\/strong> \u2013 Bright yellow in colour, and fruit-forward (lemon, green apple, and peach) on both the nose and palate with slight hints of nuts, this Pinot Blanc has a creamy sweetness to it that is balanced beautifully by its crisp acidity, a full body and long, lingering finish. Paired beautifully with grilled shellfish in a creamy lemon sauce. Bone dry, fruit (lemon and pear) forward on the nose and with a slight saltiness, it\u2019s bright, fresh, and crunchy!
