Myriam<\/p>\n<p>On the eve of a massive winter storm that threatened to shut down most of the eastern coast of the United States, I had the pleasure of briefly sitting down with Pamela Wittman prior to attending the LCBO sponsored Union des Grands Crus Bordeaux tasting at the Carlu.<\/p>\n<p>An oenologist by profession, she is now the US representative for Ch\u00e2teau Ph\u00e9lan-S\u00e9gur located in the M\u00e9doc St-\u00c9st\u00e8phe region of Bordeaux.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Chateau-vu-de-loin-600x358.jpg\" starts with a young Irish wine merchant name Bernard Phelan who settled into the area in the late 18<sup>th<\/sup> century and married a local girl whose father, a well-connected n\u00e9gotiant, enabled the purchase of estates that have become the very first outline of the existing property.<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of its history, as the Ch\u00e2teau changed ownership, its wines became more refined and established a reputation for quality, true elegance and precision.<\/p>\n<p>Xavier Gardinier purchased the property in 1985 and fuelled by a very unique vision completely renovated the Ch\u00e2teau, introduced new tools and techniques to better respect the grapes, therefore bringing the quality of his wines to an even higher level.<\/p>\n<p><a practices in and out of the vineyard, restoring the property to the position it deserves. Its unique place in the wines of Bordeaux has also created a certain art of living where the true meaning of French flair is truly demonstrated.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Vins-Phelan-Segur-600x400.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-26298\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-26298 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Vins-Phelan-Segur-600x400-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Vins-Phelan-Segur (600x400)\" width=\"395\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Vins-Phelan-Segur-600x400-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Vins-Phelan-Segur-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 395px) 100vw, 395px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The estate produces 3 wines the Ch\u00e2teau Ph\u00e9lan-S\u00e9gur, the Frank S\u00e9gur (named after Bernard\u2019s son) as well as the more Merlot rich La Croix Bonis.<\/p>\n<p>As Pamela pointed out, after a decline in popularity, Bordeaux wines are once again \u201cen vogue\u201d but the region still maintains a mystical and intimidating image for most wine drinkers.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, the region\u2019s history spans over centuries, is deeply rooted into France\u2019s culture and its habitants hold a fierce sense of pride but what should be noted more is Bordeaux\u2019s versatility when it comes to producing wine!<\/p>\n<p>The region is not only your Mouton Rothschild and Haut Brion, The Estates produce more that their top wines, usually offering a Second, Third even Fourth label each slightly different examples but with the unique house style and a price friendly to everyone\u2019s budget.<\/p>\n<p>Bordeaux is a superb wine region capable of producing reds, whites, sparklings, and sweet wines, from the super-premium cellaring examples to your everyday drinking wine. Of the 65 ch\u00e2teaux present, all were members of the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux were offering samples of the 2013 vintage.<\/p>\n<p>I jumped at the opportunity to taste some amazing whites from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/wine-reviews\/13-chateau-latour-martillac-blanc-joanne-bordeaux-2013\/205442\">Ch\u00e2teau Latour-Martillac<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/wine-reviews\/nath-johnston-and-fils-13-chateau-pape-clement-blanc-nath-johnston-and-fils-2013\/205429\">Ch\u00e2teau Pape-Cl\u00e9ment <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/wine-reviews\/13-chateau-smith-haut-lafitte-blanc-maison-sichel-2013\/205444\">Ch\u00e2teau Smith Haut Lafite <\/a>before I headed over to see Pamela for a much anticipated sample of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/wine-reviews\/chateau-phelan-segur-x-gardnier-and-fils-2013\/225112\">Ch\u00e2teau Ph\u00e9lan-S\u00e9gur <\/a>and it certainly didn\u2019t disappoint.<\/p>\n<p>Other reds sampled included Ch\u00e2teau Les Carmes Haut-Brion, Ch\u00e2teau La Lagune, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/wine-reviews\/nath-johnston-and-fils-13-chateau-branaire-ducru-st-julien-nath-johnston-2013\/205418\">Ch\u00e2teau Branaire-Ducru<\/a>, Ch\u00e2teau Gruaud Larose, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/wine-reviews\/nath-johnston-and-fils-13-chateau-lynch-bages-pauillac-nath-johnston-and-fils-2013\/205378\">Ch\u00e2teau Lynch-Bages<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/wine-reviews\/nath-johnston-and-fils-13-chateau-ormes-de-pez-st-estephe-nath-johnston-2013\/205371\">Ch\u00e2teau Ormes de Pez <\/a>and <a
