frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>By Matt Steeves<\/p>\n<p>Recently on a cold January afternoon in Ottawa a small group of sommeliers and wine writers had the fortune of spending an afternoon with the legendary Chris Hancock, MW (Hon.), of Robert Oatley Vineyards at the Empire Grill in the Byward Market.\u00a0 Chris led us through a tasting of nine of his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/blog\/robert-oatley-wines-australia\/\"><strong>wines in the Robert Oatley portfolio<\/strong><\/a> of wines.<\/p>\n<p>First of all, a bit of background about Chris Hancock.\u00a0 After graduating from his studies in Oneology, and long before joining efforts with Robert Oatley in 1975,\u00a0 Chris\u00a0 worked at Penfolds where he produced six vintages of Penfold&#8217;s iconic Grange wine between 1965 and 1973.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aegDtEP5OQ4?rel=0\" height=\"338\" width=\"600\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Fast forward nearly 40 years and this Australian wine making legend is still at it.\u00a0 With countless accomplishments and distinctions (far too many to mention here), however, one notable distinction was when we was bestowed with an honorary Master of Wine in the early 1990s.\u00a0 One of only a handful given out.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Rbt-Oakley-No-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17635\" alt=\"AppleMark\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Rbt-Oakley-No-2.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"436\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Rbt-Oakley-No-2.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Rbt-Oakley-No-2-125x109.jpg 125w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>Chris Hancock, MW, was pouring wines from the Tic Tok Pocketwatch label, Robert Oatley Signature Series, and finally the Four in Hand, of which Chris is the winemaker.<\/p>\n<p>Immediately upon tasting the first wine, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/wine-reviews\/robert-oatley-signature-series-riesling-2012\/191836\"><strong>Robert Oatley Signature Series Great Southern 2012 Riesling<\/strong><\/a> (Vintages 357426,Feb 1, 2014 release), I was impressed with the delicacy of the wine, the purity of the fruit, and the absence of what I&#8217;ve been accustomed to tasting with many value priced Australian wines (i.e. jam and syrup).\u00a0\u00a0 This was a very different style of Riesling compared to fuller bodied Australian Rieslings.\u00a0 Comprised of grapes from three regions within the The Great Southern zone, this wine exhibited characteristics of a cooler region that were very refreshing.\u00a0 Crisp, light petrol notes, rose notes, minerality, creamy with a steely acidity that persists.\u00a0 At $18 (Vintages February 2014 release) this wine offers exceptional value.\u00a0 90+ points.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Robert-Oatley-Sauvignon-Blanc.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17695\" alt=\"Robert Oatley Sauvignon Blanc\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Robert-Oatley-Sauvignon-Blanc.jpg\" width=\"70\" height=\"276\" \/><\/a>Next we tasted two <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/wine-reviews\/robert-oatley-vineyards-tic-tok-pocketwatch-sauvignon-blanc-2012\/191826\"><strong>Sauvignon Blancs, a 2012 Tic Tok Pocketwatch<\/strong><\/a> from Western Australia ($14.95 LCBO GL 187039), and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/wine-reviews\/robert-oatley-signature-series-margaret-river-sauvignon-blanc-2012\/188854\"><strong>2012 Robert Oatley Signature Series from Margaret River<\/strong> <\/a>($17.95, not available in LCBO yet).\u00a0 Both were impressive, the Tic Tok less delicate yet very expressive with great acidity and exotic fruit characteristics.\u00a0 The Maragaret River SB was delicate with declicous passion fruit, lychee, asparagus, lemon, and cantalope notes.\u00a0\u00a0 Very different stylistically from New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, however, they both were very approachable with attractive texture and purity of expression.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Vqp2GVic-_0?rel=0\" height=\"338\" width=\"600\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Chardonnay was next.\u00a0 We tasted the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/wine-reviews\/robert-oatley-vineyards-tic-tok-pocketwatch-chardonnay-2012\/186173\"><strong>2012 Tic Tok Pocketwatch Chardonnay<\/strong><\/a> from Central Ranges ($14.95 LCBO GL 187104), and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/wine-reviews\/robert-oatley-signature-series-chardonnay-2012\/189798\"><strong>2012 Robert Oately Signature Series from Margaret River<\/strong><\/a> ($17.95, Vintages 350900 January 4, 2014 release).\u00a0 Two Chardonnay&#8217;s from opposite sides of Australia (in the order of ~3,000km apart). The Tic Tok had a delicious nose of tropical fruit, butterscotch, creamed corn, with a creamy mouthfeel, and a repeat of the aromas on the palate.\u00a0 A terrific expression of lightly oaked Chardonnay with all the elements that I expect at that price point. 90+ points.\u00a0 The 2012 Robert Oately Signature Series Chardonnay from Margaret River ($17.95 Vintages 350900, January 4, 2014), was a terrific expression of medium weight Chardonnay from the well known Margaret River region.\u00a0 Limited oak influence (20% new French oak), and no malolactic fermentation produced a refreshing and delicate wine that would be terrific complement to many lighter dishes.<\/p>\n<p>Chris described how Robert Oatley Vineyards only uses French oak in their portfolio so as to have minimal oak influence on the wines, which is a divergence from the heavy oaked wine styles that Australia and other new world wine producing regions have been known for.<\/p>\n<p>I asked Chris what their main focus is with respect to wine style and he said they focus on 1. Texture, and 2. Purity of Expression, and try to achieve the highest phenolic ripeness in the fruit at the lowest alcohol level in order to maximize varietal characteristics at the lowest possible sugar level.\u00a0 Chris&#8217; goal is to produce a wine that feels like &#8220;angels dancing on your tongue&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0 Sounds divine!\u00a0 It was evident from the nine wines we tasted across their portfolio that they&#8217;ve made a major stylistic shift towards producing delicate, expressive and focused wines, with absolutely no jam or syrup.\u00a0 I was impressed with this shift and the resulting end products.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Rbt-Oakley-No-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"AppleMark\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Rbt-Oakley-No-4.jpg\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We tasted four reds next.\u00a0 A Pinot Noir and three Shiraz&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>1. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/wine-reviews\/robert-oatley-signature-series-pinot-noir-2012\/191827\"><strong>2012 Robert Oatley Yarra Valey Pinot Noir<\/strong><\/a> ($18.95 Vintages 357491, February 1, 2014 release).\u00a0 Strawberry, cherry, oak, white pepper, touch of orange zest.\u00a0 Med-light body, delicate but abundant tannins. Very tasty.\u00a0 Chris suggested pairing this Pinot Noir, slightly chilled, with spicy Thai food. 89 points.<\/p>\n<p>2.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/wine-reviews\/robert-oatley-vineyards-tic-tok-pocketwatch-shiraz-2011\/186172\"><strong> 2011 Tic Tok Pocketwatch Shiraz<\/strong><\/a> ($15.95 GL 187187).\u00a0 Sweet baking spices, slight stewed fruit, mocha, tar, slight herbaceousness.\u00a0 Exceptional value priced Shriaz.\u00a0 91 points.<\/p>\n<p>3. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/wine-reviews\/robert-oatley-signature-series-shiraz-2010\/185790\"><strong>2010 Robert Oatley Signature Series Shiraz<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Barossa-Shiraz.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17693\" alt=\"Barossa Shiraz\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Barossa-Shiraz.jpg\" width=\"64\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>4. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nataliemaclean.com\/wine-reviews\/four-in-hand-barossa-shiraz-2012\/191840\"><strong>2012 Four in Hand Shiraz Barossa Valley<\/strong><\/a> (not available in LCBO yet).\u00a0 Chris Hancock&#8217;s winemaking result.\u00a0 Although one can&#8217;t compare this to the Penfold Grange he has made in the past, it is a great effort.\u00a0 This medium-full style Shiraz exhibits layers of dark fruit, blackberries, bitter chocolate, and baking spices.
