Opened in 2005. An Ontario winemaker who decided to start his own winery and named the winery after himself. And why not? He does all the work.
The location was selected for the combination of great soils, microclimate and gentle sloping topography.
Norman's philosophy is to grow and craft Old World style wines that truly express the great minerality of our soils. Wines with depth of flavor, texture, expression of the soil and terroir superseding tutti frutti nose and no structure.
No compromises in the vineyard (everything over a sorting table and fastidious vineyard management; 1 cluster per shoot; leaf pulling; no herbicides; sustainable farming practices) Minimum intervention in the cellar. We guide the ferments as opposed to interventionist winemaking practices. 80% of our ferments are with natural yeasts, meticulous lees management and no malolactic or sulphur until late spring/mid summer. Use only the best French oak to support and lift the natural flavors of wine, often using 500 litre barrels to achieve this in Chardonnay. Filtration is only done when he feels it can improve a wine.
The winery is owned by Norman Hardie and the Lennox King Family. Norman honed his wine skills around the globe working as a sommelier for the Four Seasons Hotel group for 6 years, 1 vintage in Oregon, 3 in Burgundy, 4 at Bouchard Finlayson in South Africa, 2 in Central Otago (New Zealand), 2 in Santa Barbara and 4 in Prince Edward County.
The winery's future plans are to produce 4000 cases within the next five years, focusing on small batches of highest quality. The winery produces Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling.
