With over 200 acres of the finest vineyard land in Napa Valley and arguably one of the most popular tasting rooms and word-of-mouth followings, Frank Family Vineyards is on its way to becoming a household name for lovers of premium Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Founded in 1992 by former Disney Studios President Rich Frank and Connie Frank, Frank Family Vineyards has grown from a boutique fledgling producer to a well-respected name recognized on a national level. Frank Family’s reputation for having the friendliest hospitality in Napa Valley has fans flocking to the tasting room on Larkmead Lane, making it one of the most popular tasting rooms in wine country. Add Frank Family’s lush and likable wines with growing national distribution—thanks largely to loyal fans who’ve helped to spread the word—it’s no question that Frank Family Vineyards is a star on the rise.
The Wines
Five “California Champagnes” are handcrafted today in the old stone building: Signature Brut ($65), Blanc de Blancs ($35), Blanc de Noirs ($35), Rouge ($35) and a vintage Reserve ($55). All of these are made in the traditional French méthode champenoise style.
While the sparkling wines are a popular diversion for visitors, Rich Frank’s focus is on making superb still wines. With three vineyards located in Rutherford, Napa-Carneros and Napa’s Capell Valley, Winemaker Todd Graff has a myriad of vineyard blocks with which to craft his “blockbuster” wines. Frank Family produces both “Napa Valley” and “Reserve” wines. Napa Valley wines include Chardonnay ($32.50), Cabernet Sauvignon ($45), Zinfandel ($36.75) and Pinot Noir ($35) and are available in national distribution. The Reserve wines are available for purchase in the tasting room and on select restaurant wine lists. The highly regarded Winston Hill red wine ($150), Rutherford Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ($85) and Reserve Sangiovese ($49.50) are made entirely from Rich Frank’s personal hillside estate in Rutherford. In the fall of 2008, Frank Family released its first vintage of Promise ($250), made from select lots from the Winston Hill Vineyard in partnership with former ABC Television President, Steve McPherson. Other Reserve bottlings include Reserve Chardonnay ($55), Reserve Pinot Noir ($55), Reserve Zinfandel ($49.50) and Zinfandel Port ($65).
The theme song from “Cheers” could easily have been written for Frank Family Vineyards. Located on the quiet, tree-lined Larkmead Lane in Calistoga, Frank Family Vineyards’ tasting room is one of the most popular destinations in the valley. For many years, tastings were offered in a quaint little room known as much for its no-frills approach and friendly staff as it was for the elegant wines poured inside. Visitors flocked to the winery and returned year after year, often with more friends in tow. Today, the tasting room maintains its convivial charm housed inside a beautiful 1930s pale yellow Craftsman home, trimmed in authentic accents and with gorg
