Over the last 25 years Nicolás and Laura Catena have been on a journey of discovery through the high altitude wine country of Mendoza. Constantly pushing the viticultural envelope, they have identified the best microclimates, selected the highest quality Malbec vines, and taken vineyards to the dizzying heights of 5000' elevation.
Their mission has been to uncover those magical places in each of the family's estate vineyards which offer the highest possible quality. Farming each of these special lots manually, hand-tending to each of the vines, has lead to the identification of individual plants which consistently produce the most exceptional fruit. These Zapata Vines have been physically marked in each vineyard, ensuring the most demanding attention to detail in their care. Harvested separately in multiple passes through the vineyard, the Zapata Vines form the foundation of these Catena Zapata wines.
In 2009, Nicolás was named "Man of the Year" by Decanter Magazine, an honour that grants Nicolás a place in Decanter's winemaking Hall of Fame.
