From hiring Napa Valley's first trained enologist-André Tchelistcheff-to instituting cold fermentation for white wines, we have been on the leading edge of innovation in our pursuit of excellence. Our philosophy has always been to honor the exceptional fruit of our vineyards-including our original Rutherford estates-with the kind of meticulous, hands-on winemaking that brings out their finest expression. Today this includes careful hand-sorting of grapes for both red and white wines and cold-fermentation for whites to retain their bright, vibrant character. Red wines undergo pre-fermentation cold-soaking for optimum extraction of color, flavor and tannin, small-barrel fermentation for rich oak character, extended post-fermentation skin contact and gentle basket press. Red wines are aged in oak barrels selected for their type of oak, level of toast and age. Each winemaking technique is carefully chosen to reveal the distinctive varietal personality of grapes grown in our exceptional vineyards.
