Vintages Wine Picks December 31, 2012

White Wine

Vineland Estates Winery St. Urban Riesling 2011, V.Q.A., Niagara Escarpment, Ontario, Canada: Truly one of Niagara’s riesling masters. This incredible white is packed with flavour: bursting at the seams! Yet it’s also incredibly refined and ephemeral. Angel juice. Lots of minerality through the core and a laser-like focus on fruit purity, especially lime and lemon. I love that it's low alcohol yet packed with flavour. A spectacularly vibrant wine that bursts from the glass with lime blossom, lemon zest, white flowers and green apple. Try this lovely white with fresh seafood, shellfish, roast chicken or turkey. Pair with: shrimp tempura, grilled salmon with lemon sauce, duck liver pate, eggs benedict, planked salmon. Drink: 2011-2016. 38117 8.40% MD 750 mL  $19.95 Score: 91/100. Red Wine

Le Clos Jordanne Le Clos Jordanne Vineyard Pinot Noir 2009, V.Q.A., Niagara Peninsula, Twenty Mile Bench, Ontario, Canada: This was a great vintage for Ontario pinot noir, and this wine was one of the best that year. Fleshy dark cherry and smoke on the nose. Satin smooth texture and luscious, mouth-fillnig layers of dark berries on the palate. Surely, one of Canada’s best pinots. Long, complex finish. Pair with: osso buco. Drink: 2011-2018. 33902 13.50% XD 750 mL  $45.00 Score: 93/100. December 31, 2012 Full Review Add to: Shopping List Cellar
