Note: I publish batches of reviews that I call Good Values Wine Picks. These are from the regular section of the liquor store rather than the Vintages section, and tend to be lower priced and the most widely available of all wines. CedarCreek Estate Winery Platinum Chardonnay 2009, Okanagan Valley, BC, Canada: An opulent chardonnay made from whole berry cluster pressed grapes that were 100% barrel-fermented and aged 10 months in French oak. Oyster Bay Chardonnay 2010, Marlborough, New Zealand: Vintages Wine Panel: This elegant Chardonnay shows varietal intensity and the distinct qualities of the Marlborough region with aromas and flavors of green apple, ripe peach, vanilla, light toasty oak and a note of tropical fruit. A dry, soft and creamy crowd-pleaser with charming balance brought by a touch of acidity and toast. Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2010, Marlborough, New Zealand: Zesty, herbal with notes of chives, lemongrass and lime zest. This is the wine that put New Zealand on the map. Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc 2011, Marlborough, New Zealand: Zippy, zesty and herbal with the refreshment that only a classic New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc can offer. Featherstone Winery & Vineyard Featherstone Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2010, Niagara Escarpment, Ontario, Canada: Mango notes with lovely lifted white floral note through the centre. McWatters Collection Sundial Vineyard, Oliver Chardonnay 2010, Okanagan Valley, BC, VQA, Canada: A richly caramelized chardonnay from generous oak treatment feels and tastes luxurious. Tinhorn Creek Vineyards Pinot Gris 2010, Okanagan Valley VQA, BC, Canada: Lovely white melon, lemongrass and lime aromas in this vibrant, zesty white. Clean, crisp refreshment. Stratus White With Gift Tube 2007, V.Q.A., Niagara-On-The-Lake, Ontario, Canada: Sauvignon blanc leads in this terrific white blend. Quails' Gate Estate Winery Stewart Family Reserve Chardonnay 2009, VQA, Okanagan Valley, BC, Canada: A heavy-hitter Chardonnay firing on all sensual cylinders! Loaded with generous butter, oak, pear and pear notes. This wine was made using full barrel fermentation in French oak and then aged another 10 months in oak. Tawse Quarry Road Gewurztraminer 2010, V.Q.A., Vinemount Ridge, Niagara Peninsula, Canada: The ethereal essence of gewurztraminer with exotic aromas of violets and rose petals and ripe Asian pear and lychee fruit. Rich, luscious texture that's perfectly balanced. Great mouth-watering juiciness for a variety of dishes. The vines for this wine were grown in limstone soil, then the grapes were hand-harvested. Henry of Pelham Estate Winery Henry of Pelham Chardonnay, Barrel Fermented 2008, Niagara Escarpment, Canada: Fermented in French oak barrels (1/3 new), the wine is aged in barrel for a further seven months before bottling. Dry and full-bodied, it’s packed with apple, pear and citrus fruits that sing in perfect harmony with the spicy, warm oak notes. Tawse Winery Inc. Riesling 2010, VQA Niagara Peninsula, Ontario, Canada: The grapes for this excellent riesling were sourced from multiple vineyards in the area. The vines were cluster-thinned. There's a lovely zippy lime-fresh streak running through it, chased by lemon lightning. It finishes with notes of chives, grapefruit and the overwhelming desire for more. Tawse Winery Inc. Estate Chardonnay 2009, VQA Niagara Peninsula, Ontario, Canada: This is the winery's first time making this particular chardonnay. The fruit was sourced from the estate's Quarry Road, Robyn's Bench, David's Block and Hillside vineyards. It's both organic and biodynamically farmed. This rich layers of toasty oak and vanilla spice come from barrel fermentation followed by 12 months of aging in French oak (20% of which was new). Tawse Winery Inc. Quarry Road Chardonnay 2009, VQA Vinemount Ridge, Ontario, Canada: A gorgeous profusion of hazelnut and green apple brightness on the nose. This is followed by rich, voluptuous layers of tropical fruit and butterscotch goodness. The wine was barrel-fermented and aged 12 months in French oak (20% of which was new) and underwent a partial malolactic fermentation. Available through the winery and Vintages go to market. Henry of Pelham Estate Winery Speck Family Reserve Riesling 2008, Niagara Escarpment, Canada: Lovely petrol and white peach nose with gorgeous balance and mouth-watering juiciness. Sanford Pinot Noir 2009, Santa Rita Hills, California, United States: Vintages Wine Panel: Sanford was the first producer to plant Pinot Noir in the Santa Rita Hills area. That was 1971, and today we are truly fortunate to be able to enjoy the fruits of their labour. Lovely and bright with cherry and strawberry eau-du-vie notes on the nose. Medium bodied and dry, this Pinot is beautifully balanced with complex smoky fruit and gentle tannins. My note: Stunning with gorgeous depth of satin cherry flavour. Not heavy but packed with flavour. Gorgeous note of ripe cherries, fresh-turned earth, cinnamon and black raspberries. Velvet texture with deep layers of flavor. A fairly robust Pinot but not heavy. Rutini Wines Trumpeter Cabernet Sauvignon 2008, Mendoza, Argentina: A carpet of fleshy blackberries and plums roll across your mouth, with some lovely dark chocolate and spice on the nose. Ganton & Larsen Propect Winery Haynes Barn Merlot Cabernet 2009, Okanagan, BC, VQA, Canada: Love this, especially at this price point! It's full-bodied, but not heavy with attractive mocha and black fruit aromas. Some smoke on the finish. Almost a coffee-like warmth and depth. Very comforting indeed. Ganton & Larsen Propect Winery Regatta #1 2009, Okanagan VQA, Canada: Bright red berry and fruit notes on this medium- to full-bodied blend of cabernet sauvignon (63%), petit verdot (18%), merlot (13%), cabernet franc and shiraz. Chateau De Gourgazaud 2009, Languedoc, Roussilon, France: Stunning for this price point! Reminds me of classic Bordeaux: woodsmoke, cassis and leather with some black pepper on the nose. Hartford Court Fog Dance Vineyard Pinot Noir 2008, Russian River Valley, Sonoma, California, United States: Opens with black cherries, raspberries and smoky berries. There are hints of violets and cigar box that make this full-bodied wine ultra-seductive with its polished tannins and soft texture. Extremely cherry-berry in flavour. Cono Sur Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2009, Chile: Incredible concentration and depth of flavour for a wine at this price point! Full-bodied, layered and smooth with rich aromas of ripe blackberries, dark red plums and some dark spices. There's asome tannin here so decant this wine for 1-2 hours for maximum enjoyment. Caliterra Cabernet Sauvignon 2010, Colchagua Valley, Chile: This supple, rich, full-bodied red is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon but there's also some Shiraz and Malbec grapes in the blend. Henry of Pelham Estate Winery Brut, Niagara Escarpment, Ontario, VQA, Canada: This sparkling gets better every year, even though it's not vintage-dated. Lovely finesse and mousse with green apple vibrancy. The grapes were hand-picked in 50 pound lugs so they weren't bruised. The winery does press fractioning meaning the first bit of the juice (the head) and the last bit (the tail) aren't used in the wine just the juiciest, tastiest part of the juice. They also use the traditional Champagne method to make the wine. The wine spends 30 months on the lees which gives it a creamy texture. Serve as an aperitif on its own or add 1 oz. of Riesling Icewine or 1 oz of Cabernet Franc Icewine to 3 oz of Cuvee Catharine to make a Kir Catharine.
